Spiritual Expansion - Psychic Attack What Is It?

Psychic Attack, as defined by The Encyclopedic Psychic Dictionary (June Bletzer, PhD. 1986), is the deliberate sending of negative emotions and thoughts of hate, jealousy, envy, dis-respect, and or resentment from one person towards another person.

It is not necessary for the sender to be aware of his or her actions for the receiver to feel the effects of negative energy. Psychic Attack is passive-aggressive anger which can cause harm to the person being "attacked". It is a form of mental or emotional tampering. Meaning you are tampering with, causing un-ease in another human or animal when you think or send negative energy in the form of thoughts of emotions. This is a form of mental abuse especially as you become consciously aware of what you are doing.

An example of an exchange of positive energy is feeling happiness, contentment and joy for another's good fortune as someone shares information about an experience with you. A positive energy exchange can and does occur during the sharing of a stressful situation or a disappointment by having genuine concern, empathy or compassion for what is being shared or expressed.

A negative energy exchange occurs most often during times of stress between friends, partners, co-workers. Negative emotions can foster unhealthy relationships and hostile work environments. It will also cause dis-harmony and may cause dis-ease in your physical body, which can, if unhealed, manifest physically.

Each time you remember an unpleasant experience, a disagreement, or having been falsely accused of something, discovering a lie, your conscious mind relives the incident as if it were occurring now. The conscious mind does not distinguish between reality and imagination. It knows only "now, this moment." Each time you experience thoughts and emotions whether positive or negative you are exchanging energy with someone else.

Psychic Attack may manifest in the form of body language, verbal abuse, taunting, unkind thoughts, wishing another per! son misf ortune, speaking maliciously to a supervisor about a co-worker.

Clearing the air is an expression which carries meaning in an entirely different way now that you are becoming more aware of energy within and around you. Be aware of your thoughts, release negative thoughts and emotions in ways which are compassionate to you and to others. What you think and feel manifests into physical form one way or another.

Exchanging energy in various situations, emotions, experiences, thoughts and with others is a part of the daily experience, a part of the journey. You can, if you so choose change or shift how you perceive all that is occurring in your life. Martha Rosenberg: Are You Spiritually Fit for the Holidays? Interview With Ingrid Mathieu, Ph.D.

Anonymous twelve-step programs have helped millions recover from addictions. Yet it is also possible to use the spiritual underpinnings of the programs to avoid addiction-related problems instead of dealing with them, says researcher and psychotherapist Ingrid Mathieu in her new book. We explored these topics in an interview.


Rosenberg: In your recently published book, Recovering Spirituality, you address the concept of spiritual bypass in which recovering people can use spiritual practices to sidestep emotional work. You write that because addicts are sensitive and lean toward "symptom relief," a recovering person may "use the program just as he used his drug of choice."

Mathieu: Yes, a lot of times addicts can expect great happiness, the proverbial "cash and prizes," after they get clean and sober and when it doesn't occur, they can attempt to flee from uncomfortable feelings via spiritual bypass. I write in Recovering Spirituality that rather than feeling like they are failures or not working their program correctly, the recovery experience should be reframed to include pain and feelings of being "stuck."

Rosenberg: Some of the people whose stories you recount in the book use prayer, meditation, chanting and service work to, as you put it, "check out from life." Others try to manipulate the outcomes of prayer or even their higher power.

Mathieu: Yes, prayer when it's fused with financial gain can become less about a connection with a higher power and more of an attempt to control. When using all of the tools in the program, I encourage people to discern if they are attempting to "check out" (fix, change, remove, ignore their issues) or to "check in" (be present to their issues and experiences).

Rosenberg: In other stories you recount, a person uses a ninth step amend to an old lover as a bid to rekindle romantic feelings, and another gets re-hooked on smoking. Is getting addicted to another things, "changing rooms on the Titanic" as it is often called, part of the spiritual bypass?

Mathieu: I don't want to create the message that if you are working your program the "right way," you won't experience blind spots in your step-work, or that you won't use food or another substance to some degree. We can't avoid these things entirely and sometimes we need some "defending." Defenses, like spiritual bypass or using other things to fill the void, can be both adaptive and maladaptive. In other words, defenses aren't all bad, and they can sometimes have a positive outcome. They can cause us to hit another bottom, which invites us to look at some of our original reasons for drinking and drugging. Recovery is a perpetual process of peeling back layers of the onion.

Rosenberg: You give some examples in the book of how sponsorship advice can be too general and might foster spiritual bypass. For example, in one story, a woman who has ceased to like her home group is told by her sponsor to "pray about it" or perhaps, "call another alcoholic." What would be better advice?

Mathieu: Many people that I have interviewed or worked with in recovery have felt like "blanket solutions" that are offered do not always meet them where they are, or don't leave room to feel their feelings. Perhaps the sponsor could ask if the person has shared the uncomfortable feelings in the meeting itself, which would open both the person and others to explore the difficulty. Also, the sponsor can remind the person that it is okay to tolerate some discomfort. The "solution" can sometimes be to allow for the experience of pain, rather than attempting to get rid of it.

Rosenberg: How do recovering people know if a spiritual practice that feels uncomfortable is correct and necessary or if it's the mark of a spiritual bypass?

Mathieu: Well, much of my research made it abundantly clear that there are at least two sides to every story. Sometimes, acting "as if" is a powerful solution. For example, acting as if you don't want to drink will garner another sober day. Other times, acting "as if" is an attempt to overcome the essence of who you are. You can act as if you do not have your personal history, or any feelings about it, but acting this way does not erase your truth. Behavioral techniques such as "fake it till you make it" can be useful bridges between old behavior patterns and new ways of being, but they do not turn you into an entirely different person. I think the best guideline is for recovering people to trust their own process. I often encourage people to get curious about their experience, to ask themselves how something is -- or is not -- working for them; to become a witness to their own journey. This can lead to the other tenet of recovery: "To thine own self be true."

Rosenberg: What book are you working on as a follow-up to Recovering Spirituality?

Mathieu: My original intention of the research into spiritual bypass in recovery was to investigate the potential pitfalls. I have come out the other side with a deep appreciation for the human condition and more awareness that there is no finish line in recovery. We can't entirely avoid "mistakes" or "pitfalls." I have written about these findings in Recovering Spirituality, and would like to extend these ideas -- in the hope that we can give ourselves permission to be flawed and fallible, and to bring more compassion to what are sometimes rather challenging growing pains, that will inevitably be experienced over and over again.

Government drafts 'happiness indicators' to supplement economic data

The Cabinet Office unveiled on Monday a set of indicators designed to measure public happiness to complement government economic statistics.

Announced at the opening of an Asia-Pacific forum on well-being held in Tokyo, the statistics are designed to gauge happiness based on three major factors — socioeconomic conditions, physical and mental health, and relationships.

The 132 indicators concern objective circumstances, such as poverty and parenting leave, as well as such subjective areas as sense of trust in others and radiation worries.

One indicator reflects environmental activities by households and companies, such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions to fight global warming.

The Asia-Pacific Conference on Measuring Well-Being and Fostering the Progress of Societies, organized by the Cabinet Office's Economic and Social Research Institute, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development as well as other bodies, runs through Tuesday.

The Cabinet Office refrained from compiling the indicators into a single integrated set, saying doing so would only conceal the features of each sphere of happiness.

Among other countries, Bhutan is known for its gross national happiness index and France is considering developing one of its own.

Measuring well-being and progress is a key priority for the OECD, which says it has been looking for almost a decade beyond economic functions to the diverse experiences and living conditions of people and households.

Your Mind is Killing You: A new way of thinking for teens and kids

Have you ever thought about what makes a murderer a murderer?

I know. It's weird. But indulge me.

What makes a murderer do what he does? Is it genetic? Is there a gene that makes one a murderer? Maybe…in a way. Maybe he or she has a certain predisposition towards violence. But what makes them actually pull the trigger, or sink the knife? What is the most direct cause of the actual decision? Isn't it the mind? Isn't it his or her mind telling him that he needs to do that, that that's the only way to satisfy whatever wrong someone or everyone has committed against him?

And what about the person who has a crippling fear of spiders? What makes him afraid? Is it learned? Perhaps. Maybe he was bitten by a spider before, and has therefore been taught by his own pain and suffering, his own experiences, that his safety and health are most assured by avoiding them. Maybe not, though. Maybe he's never in his life even seen a spider. We all know people like that, who fear that which they have never actually encountered. What then? What causes his fear? Isn't it the mind also? Isn't it his mind telling him that if he holds that spider, the spider WILL (not maybe, but will) bite him. He will die. He will then regret holding the spider.

And what about the person with low self-esteem? What causes that person to be, say, ashamed of their body? What causes the heavier girl to refuse to wear a bathing suit at the beach? Is it because of actual beach rules that state that people over X weight for Y height, and therefore defined as "fat," cannot wear bathing suits on the beach? Of course not. There exists no such rule. Isn't it her mind then? Isn't her anxiety caused by her mind's habit and desire to compare her body to others? Isn't it because her mind tells her everyday that she is fat, or ugly, and ought to be ashamed of her body?

Minds are a lot like people of their own, aren't they? They have a voice. They have opinions. They have a history. They have memories. They k! now ever ything you know, and they think they know a lot more. The loneliest people often say that their mind is their only friend, and in a way that is true of everyone. No one in this room will converse with anyone today as much as they will with their own mind. Your mind whispers to you every waking moment for the duration of your life. So let's pretend that the mind is a person. Let's give him or her a physical body. Let's pretend that this person will literally follow you every place you go, perhaps like many of your actual friends already do now.

Now let's go back to the beach. As soon as you step out of your car, your "friend," your mind, says: "You are fat. You will not look good in this bathing suit. If you wear it, you will be stared at. You will be judged. Everybody is watching you. No one thinks you are attractive." Or maybe your friend says, "Spiders kill people. You are weaker than the spider. If you hold it, it will kill you." Or maybe he says, "This person deserves to die. This person has no right to live. You should kill this person."

What do you think would happen? What do you think would happen if things like this were fed into you're your consciousness every moment of every day? Would you laugh it off as nonsense, or would you take it to heart? Maybe it'd seem ridiculous at first, but isn't it true that one day, eventually, you'd actually start to believe it. Don't believe me? Examine it for yourself. See it happen in others. See it in yourself. But why is this the case?

Well, say you were at that beach wearing that bathing suit you feared. Your friend, your mind, tells you repeatedly that you cannot wear that bathing suit. You will be stared at. You will be avoided. People will judge you negatively. As you walk up the beach to set your stuff down, a cute guy passes by and makes eye contact. The stranger doesn't say or do anything really. Doesn't smile. Doesn't frown. Doesn't say hello, but doesn't start laughing either. Your friend, your mind, tells you! : "See! He didn't even acknowledge you! I told you I was right. You need to keep your shirt on over your bathing suit. This beach is filled with better bodies. What were you thinking?"

Surely some in this room have had experiences like that, or at least similar. What if we change the circumstances, would it make a difference? Say the stranger did smile, or maybe even looked away, what then? Wouldn't your friend, your mind, say: "Oh, he looked away! I told you. You look like a whale wrapped in cloth. Go back to the car right now." Or maybe, "See he smiled! But he didn't mean it. It was a pity smile, because you look like a whale wrapped in cloth."

See how your friend works. See how your mind works. The world around you is irrelevant to your mind. It creates the world it wants. The mind of a person who believes him or herself to be overweight will create the proof of that opinion. It will find it, whether it is actually there or not.

There was an episode of The Simpsons where Homer says something to the effect of: "Facts schmacts. You can prove anything even remotely true with facts." Think about that. Where it concerns our mind, it is true. We do it everyday, to our own demise. Those who believe in God have proven its truth. They see his existence in every sunrise and every birth, every good fortune and every bad fortune. Those who believe no God exists have also proven that truth. They see his non-existence in every cell divided and ancient skeleton found, every happy turn of chance and every senseless tragedy.

Reality is subjective. It is subjective because, for the most part, the world is a mystery. We have no real knowledge of what happened yesterday, we don't understand what happens today, and we have no clue what will happen tomorrow. Our entire existence is a mystery, and therefore every action and every day of our lives as well, and that fills us with fear. Your mind does not like mysteries. It needs an answer, an explanation for everything, and if one is not given it w! ill prov ide one on its own. We cannot read the thoughts of others or predict the future, but your mind will make the attempt anyway. We cannot tell what that stranger on the beach was thinking. Maybe he did think you were fat. Maybe he thought you were cute. Or maybe he was just wondering if he remembered to lock his car doors. Really, it doesn't matter what he was thinking, and it shouldn't matter to you.

Realize now…your mind is not your friend, as it exists right now. In most cases, it is your worst enemy. It is the cause of every fear and insecurity, every criminal and tyrant, every road-rager and bully. We are slaves to our thoughts, puppets to its will; not because it is inherently so, or by necessity so, but because we allow it to be so. Beware of it, and be conscious of what it whispers to you. We are stronger than our minds. We are stronger than our emotions, than our feelings. You have the power to change your thoughts, to make them work for you rather than against you. We as humans have that power, but we all too often give it away.

What separates "you," your style, your beliefs, your personality from that of the young kid living in a shack in Africa, barefoot, uneducated, and starving? Everything, right? But really, only one thing separates you from that kid…that you are here and he is there, for if you had been born to his same parents, if you had lived his same experiences, you would share his same thoughts, you would share his same life. You would be him. You are who you are, but could have been any other. The only reason you are not a dolphin, is that your parents weren't born with flippers.

We are the sum of our experiences, the result of our circumstances. We are the product of the society we live, the world that surrounds our little bubbles. You must be conscious of this in dealing with others.

Have sympathy and understanding for the bully who picks on you. He thinks he needs to push around others to feel important in life. He is addicted, as minds tend to become! , to the emotional high of seeing others react to him. If others react to him, he must be important. To make himself feel better about himself, he needs to see others feel even worse. But it doesn't make him feel better. Probably he was likewise picked on by others, maybe a father or an older brother, and his mind told him he needed to become violent to cope with his particular reality. One day he'll realize that his actions have driven anyone of quality from his life, that all his friends are jerks like him, that he'll get nowhere in life threatening others. Lose your fear of him, and he loses his power over you. Pity him, and never let him affect you emotionally. He is just who you would be if you were him.

Have sympathy and understanding for the loners in your school. In many ways they feel more safe in themselves; alone and friendless. Their minds have taught them to fear social interactions, for threat of rejection, but they don't realize that those thoughts have already produced that result, for they are rejected. Realize that they, like all humans, simply want someone to like them, to show them kindness, to accept them as a friend. They are simply too afraid to make that happen, too afraid to step outside of their comfort zone, too afraid to even say hello to a stranger. Perhaps you can instead, for you understand that a loner is just what you would be if you were them.

Have sympathy and understanding for the popular kids in school. They follow each other, like chickens with their heads cut off. They dress the same, talk the same, are the same. Their mind's desire to fit in, to be accepted by this circle of people that their mind has labeled valuable, hasforced them to give up that which was unique about themselves. They are clones, and they'll find out that being a clone isn't all that it promised to be. Don't fear them as more valuable or cooler than you, don't hate them as better than you, for they are just what you would be if you were them.

Have sympathy and ! understa nding for your parents. It is likely they fight, and quarrel. It is likely that many of them are separated, and if not separated, probably ought to be. They've forgotten the love it takes to raise a child, and the example their actions become to those they are meant to provide for and love.

One day, everyone will be gone from the earth. On that day that you go, when you realize there will be no tomorrow, do you really believe that you will waste one thought on the A you didn't get in calculus…or the college that rejected you…on the crush who never noticed you…the boy or girl who broke your heart…or the bully who pushed you around…or the friend that betrays you…the clothes you didn't get to buy…the popular crowd you were never invited to hang out with? Will those be the last thoughts in your head? Or is it more likely that on that day, your mind, the mind which everyday previous had done everything it could to make you a nervous, anxious, and angry person, will finally be silent, and you'll realize that everything it told you was a lie. None of that stuff mattered. It was all an exaggeration. It all meant nothing in the end. Will you realize then that you wasted your life worrying about things you had no control over by letting that which was out of your control control you?

Luckily for us, we needn't wait till that day. We can make that same choice, for that's all that it is – a choice – we can make that choice today. We can decide that we do not care what others think of us in a superficial sense. We can choose to have an unwavering sense of self worth. We can decide that we will not let others dictate our reality. We won't let a snide comment affect us, or a mean-spirited action depress us. We can choose to be stronger. We can decide that if the world is what we make of it, we will make it one of positivity, kindness, and affection. We can choose to be happy.

If we make that choice today then on that day when we depart this earth, I am willing to bet I know exactly wha! t you wi ll be thinking: "The world is a wonderful place. Life is a wonderful thing. And I've done everything in my power to make it so, for that was all that was in my power."

Zen As An Aesthetically Pleasing Meditation

You may not know it, but Zen is a significant but only moderately sized sect of Buddhism in Japan. Most Japanese do not regard the Zen sect as particularly special or different from all the other Buddhist sects in Japan, and seem to become confused when Western visitors speak of 'Zen' with an apparent significance. In other words, most Japanese are not aware of Zen's glorious history in Japan and probably were not taught it. That is a whole other story though.

Briefly, long ago Zen was a major Buddhist sect in China, where it is no longer extant. It made its way into Japan and grew very quickly, becoming eventually by far the largest sect of Buddhism in Japan and finally grew so large that it had profound influences on the whole culture.

Of these, probably the biggest impact Zen has had on the world is through aesthetics. To the Western eye, the Zen aesthetic is both minimalist and elegant. It also very impressive in accomplishing an effect that is far larger than the input that went into the making of the art. In a word, Zen is deep, just like the simple circle one looks through to look down a well. Finally, Zen inspired art like most art is replete with symbolism, sometimes unabashedly obvious (like the rock gardens that represent islands in the sea). Zen art is also highly ritualized, though that may not be apparent to the viewer. A classic example that is made for participation however is the tea ceremony. There is so much protocol that sometimes people feel quite nervous when they try it the first time.

Japanese arts are friendly to the novice and encourage participation. Whatever your proclivity, be it haiku or ikebana, you can easily find an inexpensive sensei nearby to show you the ropes. In the Zen aesthetic, the doing is the art, the result the artifact.

Is happiness for real or is it a state of the mind? Thomas Hardy described happiness as an “occasional episode in a general drama of pain.” Hardy has been criticised for “being overly pessimistic about humanity's place in the scheme of things.” We may or may not agree with Hardy, but both optimists and pessimists are still struggling with the concept of happiness and the factors that contribute toward making human beings happy. Of course, the core question is: what is this illusive emotion, termed happiness? Different individuals may have different views, but a generic definition of happiness is: “A mental state of well-being characterised by positive emotions” or, in layman's terms, happiness is the sense of satisfaction we have in life.

Is happiness determined by heredity or circumstances, or can we control how happy or unhappy we are? Behavioural geneticist and psychologist David Lykken compared happiness data on identical vs. fraternal twins and reached the conclusion that about 50% of one's satisfaction with life comes from “genetic programming.” Genes influence personality traits like “having a sunny, easygoing disposition; dealing well with stress; and feeling low levels of anxiety and depression.” Lykken also found that circumstantial factors like income, marital status, religion and education contribute only about 8% to one's overall well-being. The remaining percentage is attributed to “life's slings and arrows.” These findings may cause many of us to take a fatalistic approach toward the pursuit of happiness. If it is primarily genes that determine our level of satisfaction with life, then behavioural changes may not help improve our emotional well-being! But let us not forget that we still have the 50% that is not genes to play around with, at least to a certain degree.

What is interesting is that most researchers have found that money cannot buy happiness “beyond the point at which people have enough to comfortably feed, clothe, and house themselves!” On the contrary, spending money on others makes us happier than spending it on ourselves. Also, interpersonal virtues like kindness, gratitude and capacity for love are strongly tied to happiness. Altruistic acts can be real mood enhancers since focusing on others diverts our minds and we worry less about ourselves. In addition, compassion helps us put our own problems in perspective because we realise that we are not the only ones suffering.

Regrettably, many of us fall into the age-old trap of seeking happiness through increased income, status and material attributes. In this context an anecdote is worth recounting. An acquaintance of mine has an unusually competitive streak and believes that the only way one can achieve happiness is by competing (and winning) with others on all material fronts. Sometimes she takes her competitiveness to a ludicrous level. When a mini-hurricane hit Maryland and Virginia causing widespread power outages in many neighbourhoods, she called friends and acquaintances to find out how many people had lost power. The purpose? Not to empathise, but to convey the message that neighbourhoods that were without power were in some way inferior. And, since she still had electricity she was standing on higher ground. She may have got an ego boost, but she succeeded in ruining quite a few relationships in the process!

I am not sure whether the lady in question is a happy person, but I do believe that deriving pleasure at the misfortune of others does not help us attain happiness. Didn't our elders tell us that we attract what we generate and bad energy sent out into the world will be reflected back to us? This age-old wisdom is now supported by a significant body of research which confirms that positive human interactions have a great impact on happiness.

Despite all the knowledge and insight on how to achieve happiness, I often wonder: “Why isn't the world one happy place?” May be because the strategies for attaining happiness require tremendous effort and years of practice before they can be perfected. And, individuals cannot change their habitual coping styles easily. The bottom line is that one needs to renew one's commitment to happiness every day, every moment, because happiness is not a destination but a constant journey.

The Story Of Happiness

Daniel Kahneman recently answered a variety of questions from the Freakonomics crowd. On the relation between pleasure, utility and happiness:

[B]eing happy (on average) in the moment and being satisfied retrospectively are not the same thing. People are most likely to be happy if they spend a lot of time with people they love, and most likely to be satisfied if they achieve conventional goals, such as high income and a stable marriage.

Sam Harris interviewed Kahneman earlier this week. How Kahneman's thoughts on happiness have evolved:

I used to hold a unitary view, in which I proposed that only experienced happiness matters, and that life satisfaction is a fallible estimate of true happiness. I eventually concluded that this view is not tenable, for one simple reason: people seem to be much more concerned with the satisfaction of their goals than with the achievement of experienced happiness. A definition of subjective well-being that ignores people's goals is not tenable. On the other hand, an exclusive focus on satisfaction is not tenable either. If two people are equally satisfied (or unsatisfied) with their lives but one of them is almost always smiling happily and the other is mostly miserable, will we ignore that in assessing their well-being?

Using our personal strengths is much like breathing. It's something we do automatically and that we take for granted. It's only when we're gasping for breath that we become acutely aware of its importance. Sometimes we experience a similar feeling when we're facing trouble - overwhelmed, frustrated, discouraged or fearful. Studies show that people who consistently use their strengths are satisfactorily engaged in their work and love life, enjoy a high level of happiness, and are able to successfully produce positive outcomes. When facing the many challenges that are inherent in being a parent, teacher, coach or student, it's crucial to know what inner resources we possess that will enable us to successfully prevail in achieving positive outcomes. When looking at all of the goals we're trying to reach, it's heartening to be able to pull out a list of the best things about ourselves in order to figure out how to attain our objectives.

Advocating with our strengths gives us the ability to build a bridge between ourselves and other people. Imagine being able to pull out a strengths matrix that listed the best talents of everyone in your family, on your team or in your classroom. Then when you're discussing how best to achieve a goal, you'd be able to see how each person could contribute by being able to be at their best. When everyone is aware of the strengths that each person possesses, a common language evolves that enables people to discuss how to use strengths to address issues.

Relating with strengths promotes positive connections and collaboration with other people, which is a crucial skill when confronting problems. Rather than dwelling on what people did wrong and why, people can learn to have conversations that center around how to make things right and what strengths to apply in order to most effectively make that happen. We can't always do things right, but we can always make things right if we use our strengths (put our inner values into action) to appeal to other people's strengths (create shared values and supportive interactions).

Training makes strengths stick. In creating a strengths-based culture in a family, a team or an organization, it's important to have a standard set of tools and techniques to use in order to teach people how to spot, manage, advocate and relate with their strengths. Appendix B in "SMART Strengths" provides 50 pages of exercises for learning, building and using strengths. In addition, there are activities for supporting resilience, achieving goals, building relationships and learning to appreciate the good in ourselves and others.

Zen As A Religion?

What is Zen, and why are so many people interested in it? Is Zen a religion? Why has it become so popular in the West, to the point where the word 'zen' is now an adjective (as in, "that's so zen")?

Well, first of all Zen is in fact many things and yes; indeed, among those things Zen is a bona fide religion. Buddhism, though some like to claim as more of philosophy or a way of life, is a religion. It is not just a 'spiritual philosophy.' Among its tenants are the concept of reincarnation, heaven and hell, Gods and spirits, unique angel-like creatures called Kannon, and demons, there is a world too in which the dead dwell and come back to earth from once a year. It presupposes that every human being is full with latent Buddha nature that will someday bloom into enlightenment. At the peaceful end, all humans will achieve enlightenment and there will be no more need for human existence on earth, which is equated with suffering.

I mention the above particularly because these details of hell and angels usually get passed over when people try to describe Buddhism, which Zen is of but one sect of and naturally adheres to the same major beliefs. I know these things because I have lived in Japan for twenty years, and although the Japanese are not religiously devout at the moment, they see Buddhism as religion, not philosophy.

Why is Zen so popular? I think mainly because of the minimalist Zen aesthetic, which swept Japan in the middle ages. The rock gardens, haiku, ink painting, and tea ceremony- basically all of what we now consider traditional Japanese art- all come from Zen. So do the martial arts that the samurai and ninja used to defeat their foes. In a way, Zen had such a pervasive effect on Japanese culture that it's not outlandish to say that Japanese culture is Zen culture.

Little is know about the Buddha's life, as there was no documentation and he spent so much of his time in solitude. But there is an oral tradition, and that seems to be consistent and unchanged over the years. In any case, it is said that the Buddha went through a period of severe asceticism (depicted in images known as "The Fasting Buddha"), only to reject in favor of a set of principles to live by which has come to be known as "The Middle Path."

The Buddha, of course, continued his meditation until reaching nirvana. But during that time he ate in a healthy, and, I would presume, exercised and got enough sleep.

Asceticism, despite the teaching of the middle path, has always been a part of Buddhist practice however. For example, Daruma, a famous cave ascetic who helped spread Buddhism to China, was said to have cut off his eyelids so that he wouldn't fall asleep during meditation, and he is depicted in illustrations as have great, bulging eyeballs (in reality, cutting off your eyelids would make you go blind of course).

What is not legendary at all though is what Zen parishioners go through at temples. Sleep deprivation, food deprivation, and solitary confinement are all par for the course if one seeks enlightenment. Certainly, depriving the senses heightens awareness, and it is known that when pushed to the right point, consciousness will be transformed into what is called 'mu no seikai' or, 'the world of the not.' Perhaps an easier perspective for the Westerner would be to say 'a state of pure undisturbed consciousness.'

What role does Zen have in all this? None really aside from the fact that it famous for being more conservative and more rigorously ascetic than other Buddhist sects. As a matter of chance, Zen was one of the first sects to become well known in the West and is now synonymous not just with Buddhism in general, but the East Asian way of thinking in general. Zen in the West is romantic, but in reality it is just another sect, albeit a tough, ascetic one.! 3;
