Using Hypnosis Mind Control for a More Relaxed Existence

Article by Christopher Lawson

When you are under hypnosis your focus is heightened, you have more concentration and you are more in touch with your emotions and your resolves. In this state, a person becomes calm and relaxed which allows them to concentrate on their emotions, thoughts or sensations and they will have the capability to block out distractions. The subconscious mind of the person becomes more active than their conscious mind. So when you think about it, hypnosis deals with the person's subconscious.

Since hypnosis deals with the person's subconscious, the person becomes more open to suggestion, so they lose their inhibitions to do things. A clear example would be when the subject is being hypnotized and being told that they are in the water, they will "feel" the cool water in their face, in their hands or in their feet as instructed. They will have the sensation of walking or splashing in the water, as suggested. They will "hear" the soothing sound of the cascading water. They get to "experience" these suggestions, and they are not inclined to question the suggestions. They just feel them and go ahead with the feeling, which is why there is a completely relaxed feeling when one is hypnotized.

It is important to note however that no matter how strong the suggestibility of an idea is, or how strong the suggestive power of the hypnotist is, the subconscious mind of the person strongly holds on to the basic values of morality. The person never betrays themselves and there is always a sense of safety. It means that a person's subconscious is still in the control and will refuse to do things like jump from the top of the building. Even though the person is in a trancelike situation when hypnotized, they still have control of their mind and body. They will not do things, even when strongly suggested, when these things are against their morals.

The power of hypnosis mind control comes in when the hypnotist uses suggestions and other therapeutic interventions to coach the subject into doing something to! achieve their goals, or altering their way of thinking and feeling. The openness of the person to accept these suggestions while under a hypnotic state goes deeper into their subconscious mind. This is a very powerful tool for the hypnotist because when they know their subject very well, they will be able to access more information from the person and they will be able to drive the person into a more positive state. This will work very well for the person who is being hypnotized as it combines both relaxation and concentration and upon awakening they will feel refreshed.

It means that the person, while being subjected to hypnosis, can concentrate on their problems, anxieties, and the things which need improvement without losing control over their emotions. They still retain the feeling of being relaxed. The subject gets to absorb the important aspects and purpose of hypnosis, which will bring more positivity and happiness to their life.

Spirituality: Let me say this about that

"Can you say more about that?" is a diagnostic question that many of my hospital chaplain colleagues will ask a patient to get them to unpack the details of their story.

Several of my readers put me on the receiving end of that question this week in reference to the columns I've written in the last few months. Therefore, this column will be an effort to "say more about that."

First, several of you e-mailed about my youngest daughter who had been visiting her sister in South Carolina when she was stricken with inexplicable liver and kidney failure. I'm glad to report that she has been discharged from the Charleston hospital and will no longer require kidney dialysis. Doctors said the incident was likely the "perfect storm" of an infection, dehydration, and a few too many Tylenol products. Her liver has also recovered and she is now back home in Sacramento looking for employment.

Many of you wrote because you had been expecting an update about my daughter in the column that followed, but since we were still waiting on some test results, I remained silent. Instead of an update, I submitted my annual column of personal book recommendations and asked you to suggest titles for next year's list.

I was intrigued by some of your suggestions as they proved my list woefully shortsighted. While I've not had time to read any of the books you suggested, I did find some of them interesting enough to add to my nonfiction list for next semester. Your suggestions are as follows:

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" by Rebecca Skoots

"What's so Amazing about Grace?" by Philip Yancey

"Enrique's Journey: The Story of a Boy's Dangerous Odyssey to Reunite with His Mother" by Sonia Nazario

"The Sunflower" by Simon Wiesenthal.

In an October column, I wrote about a bothersome churchwoman from my high school years that asked me, "Have you received the gift of the Holy Spirit?" Several readers from the charismatic tradition perceived some impatience on my part and graciously suggested that I consider the validity of the woman's idea.

After I re-read my writing, I realized that I failed to let you know how perpetually annoying the woman had become to me as well as several others in the church. In other words, this wasn't just a simple single question that was asked and answered. It had become a persistent barrage of judgment coming through repetitive interrogations.

Finally, in the November column I called, "Don't be a Zax," I told you about how I'd settled a 13-year hurt with a fellow chaplain by finally complying with Jesus' advice: "If a fellow believer hurts you, go and tell him -- work it out between the two of you. If he listens, you've made a friend." I got a lot of e-mail about this one -- some from people who shared the relief of having recently forgiven another and also from readers who are still looking for the courage to approach the one who hurt them.

In the six weeks since our meeting, we've exchanged a few e-mails that have assured me that our get-together was genuine. And although the e-mails haven't spawned any blossoming friendship, I think I can say without equivocation that our granting of mutual forgiveness was one of the most important things I've ever experienced.

And that's all I have to say about that.

Yoga Meditation to Free the Mind

Article by Daveopton

Yoga and meditation are two useful practices that balance each other and, when skillful together, expand the practitioner's occurrence. The word Yoga means "unification," a state which occurs when the body and mind are in concord. For this to occur, the mind must be at a standstill.

There are several kinds of meditation, but meditation (concentration), on a function, is a good place to start. Deliberation can be thought of as the ability to put the intelligence on one thing and leave it there.To begin concentration meditation, watch the breath go in and out at one point in the body, and count to ten breaths. Many thoughts will come into your brain and disturb you, but if you can get to ten, you are doing healthy.

A variety of different relaxation techniques can help you bring your nervous system back into balance by producing the relaxation response. The relaxation response is not lying on the couch or sleeping but a mentally active process that leaves the body relaxed, calm, and focused.

There is no single relaxation technique that is best for everyone. When choosing a relaxation technique, consider your specific needs, preferences, fitness level, and the way you tend to react to stress. The right relaxation technique is the one that resonates with you, fits your lifestyle, and is able to focus your mind and interrupt your everyday thoughts in order to elicit the relaxation response.The first and most important thing is to find a place where there are no outside disturbances. You have to know the correct posture to adopt so its best if you practice yoga meditation under a professional at least in the beginning till you are able to do it properly on your own. Once you have the place and the posture, then find a point on which to fix your mind.

Yoga meditation is not easy nor is it simple. One has to be prepared physically and mentally for the conditioning that it is going to provide to your mind. It means freedom from material connections and one has to be strong-minded en! ough to go through with it.In order for meditation to take place, the mind must be willing to look at itself. When the collective consciousness of a society meditates on a regular basis, it will be reflected by peaceful behavior.

Yoga Meditation is a wonderful resource for mankind because it can bring the mind to a state of peace with itself. A global society, which has an addiction to multi-tasking, needs time to "unplug" itself, and Yoga meditation offers realistic solutions.

Couple's happiness forged in adversity

MARION — Neil and Pam Frustaglio's best Thanksgiving yet has its roots, improbably, in the aftermath of a bitter war.

Darkness had fallen in Ramadi, Iraq, on Dec. 7, 2005, when an explosion rocked his column. Frustaglio, a Marine corporal, ordered his team to the stricken vehicle. As they dismounted, he told Cpl. Joseph Bier to stand watch on one street corner.

"They were watching us," Frustaglio said. "We all distinctly remember hearing a click."

There was a blast and searing heat. Bier, 22, was killed instantly by waves of shrapnel. Five others lost limbs. Frustaglio came to, face down in the street, and crawled through the smoke until he passed out. Later he would learn that he lost both legs as a result of the blast.

That's when the miracles began. His heart stopped three times. In rehab at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., he set two goals — to see his Marines return home, and to walk down the aisle with his fiancée, Pam.

After rehab, the couple moved to Green Bay, Wis.; but after a visit to San Antonio, they were drawn by the city's shirt-sleeve weather and military-friendly atmosphere. After receiving a new home in Marion designed to accommodate his disability, Frustaglio and his bride were surrounded by hundreds who built it.

Now their sons, Duncan, 18 months, and Dillinger, 3, play in the one-story house and on Sundays watch Green Bay games on a widescreen television with their mom and dad.

"This year," Pam said, "will be our first happy Thanksgiving."

It isn't their first Thanksgiving at the house, donated by Homes for Our Troops. They moved into the house in September 2010. A month later, Pam's brother, a Marine, was at Brooke Army Medical Center after losing a leg in an accident.

Once 6-foot-4, Frustaglio lost more than both of his legs above the knee. He struggles with the debilitating effects of traumatic brain injury. At the grocery store, Frustaglio sometimes can't remember everything he needs to buy.

Then there is PTSD, and the guilt he felt after giving Bier his last order. The guilt has occasionally weighed heavily, alarming Pam.

"It was always my fear that you would turn suicidal," she said.

"That's your fears that you're placing onto it," he responded.

A good therapist helped, as did a visit to Bier's grave. But a strong marriage anchored in shared beliefs and intense devotion is a key source of strength.

The week before Thanksgiving, a friend on Facebook asked what one thing it takes to make relationships work.

"How to effectively communicate," Pam replied.

A minute later, from a different location, Neil wrote, "Communication. Communication. Communication."

At 28, Neil is the introvert. Pam, 27, is outgoing. Both, though, have steel in their spines, the kind that defiantly challenges adversity. They talk of being mature beyond their years, of being skeptical, but they were tough-minded people well before Ramadi.

Growing up on Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Neil liked the Marine Corps' promise to make life hard on him. He joined after graduating from high school and later served in Silverdale, Wash., where he met Pam.

"A month after he started dating me, he told me he loved me, and we've had our life planned out ever since," said Pam, a one-time airman. "We fell hard, and we fell fast."

They were engaged a year later, with the wedding set for Sept. 23, 2006. Even before Neil left for Ramadi, however, Pam had a terrible premonition — that he would be badly injured and lose one leg.

Word of his injury came during finals week at Portland Community College. After spending time with him at Walter Reed, she returned to Portland and her classes, but things had changed with her friends.

"I really don't think that they really understood," Pam said. "They didn't see it, they didn't live it, it didn't happen."

Neil threw himself into rehab, always keeping their wedding date and the return of his Marine unit in mind. He also worked to pick up the spirits of his buddies and make sure they got through it together.

At the wedding, Neil walked in his dress uniform with his bride, his trousers covering prosthetic limbs.

There are things he can't do, like chase the boys in the yard or play tackle football with Dillinger, whose name was inspired by the movie "Public Enemies." But there are workarounds, one of them letting his boys sit in his lap.

"I guess when it comes down to it, the things I don't get to do are far outweighed by the things I do get to do because I'm here," he said.

His wife, a child studies major at the University of the Incarnate Word, found another way to explain their lives in a recent writing assignment. Pam's story looks at life-altering injuries from the eyes of a child.

"My daddy is different, don't you see it?" she wrote. "He doesn't have regular old hairy legs, he has super-cool robot legs. My daddy is different, don't you see? He is a United States Marine, and he has fought for both you and me so that we can be free."

Zen and the Pure Esoteric School

Zen Buddhism
by araki

Article by Michael Jordan B

The cultivation practices of Tibet evolved from the spiritual traditions of both India and China. The spiritual practices of other countries have also often been shaped by foreign imports. In the case of Japan, its spiritual history has many parallels to that of Tibet but to understand this country's cultivation practices, we must look to China rather than India for the roots of foreign influences. In particular, we must investigate the cultural influences of China's Tang dynasty (618-907 A.D.) since it was this period of Chinese history that had the greatest impact on Japan's spiritual schools.

China's Tang dynasty can be described as a great mixing period when Indian, Japanese, Korean and Tibetan cultural trends interacted with China at their fullest. The most obvious proof of even earlier foreign interaction is the fact that the word "China" comes from the Ch'in dynasty, when foreigners mistook the name of the dynasty for the name of the country. Anyway, the Tang dynasty itself was a period of continuous and concentrated contact between various countries and Mainland China.

During China's Tang dynasty, there were three main pillars of Chinese society and culture: Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism. The Buddhism of this period had by now developed into ten different schools of study, but the central sect in Chinese Buddhism was the Zen school established by Bodhidharma. It was because of Bodhidharma's pilgrimage from India that the Indian form of Zen had entered China. After its initial introduction, the Zen transmission continued through five successive Patriarchs until Zen finally became fully assimilated into Chinese culture.

Bodhidharma and his five successors, including the famous monk Hui-neng, were called "Patriarchs" because they had all attained enlightenment. They could not be called "Buddhas" as they would be delineated as the second Buddha, the third Buddha and so on. They were the founders of the Chinese Zen school who had achieved enlightenment and greatly inf! luenced Chinese culture, and this is why they were therefore honored with the title of "Patriarch."

The Sixth Patriarch of Zen, Master Hui-neng, was an illiterate peasant before he became enlightened. The very fact that an individual who could not read became the Sixth Patriarch says much about the Zen school and the nature of the times. The Sixth Patriarch dispensed with much of the religious trappings of Buddhism that had developed over the years, and his way of explaining spiritual teachings to the people was very down to earth. Zen therefore became quite popular because it touched the people's hearts and minds, and became embodied in a form of expression that the common man could understand. As a result of this development, Buddhism's impact on the politics and culture of the times became so substantial that it ended up transforming the co-existing schools of Confucianism and Taoism as well.

In the Tang dynasty, the Chinese cultural influences, such as Zen, spread all over Asia, and even reached distant regions. America today is considered a superpower and wants to exert this type of influence, but it has never seen its culture infiltrate Europe nor the Orient in the same way that Tang China established a presence throughout Asia. While United States has definitely influenced the world, the transmission of its influence has not been due to a world-wide recognition of American life as representing "high culture."

During the Tang dynasty, many scholars came to China from Japan and Korea because they respected the Tang culture and wanted to learn everything that it possibly had to offer. The Chinese Emperor built a gigantic complex in Xian for all these visiting scholars. He welcomed them to stay for as long as they liked and allowed them to leave whenever they desired. There was no pressure on these visiting scholars, and many stayed in China to become citizens or even court officials. Others took what they learned back to their home countries, thus influencing their native cultures.

! When you go to another country, one of the first things that usually impresses you is the environment, particularly the architectural structure of the buildings and layout of the land. At that time, the Tang architecture was perhaps the best in the world, hence it was imitated in other countries and was one of the ways in which Tang culture made a big impact on other nations. The visiting scholars from other countries also closely observed China's arts, its political system, the people's clothing and every other facet of Chinese culture, including the cultivation concepts of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism. In the world today, Japan and Korea are the only two remaining places that have preserved any of the highest cultural developments of the Tang dynasty, for in China itself, practically nothing is left. But both Japan and Korea are also quickly losing what is left of their Tang dynasty heritage.

At the beginning of the Tang dynasty, since Emperor Tang Taizong's family name was Li, he started searching for a great religious master of the same name among the Buddhist, Taoist and Confucian schools of the time. The official state religion ended up becoming Taoism, rather than Buddhism, simply because of this emphasis on the last name; the founder of Taoism was Lao Tzu, who was also known as Li Lao-chun. Because of this similarity of names, Taoists priests during the Tang dynasty were accorded a slightly higher rank than Buddhist monks although both spiritual groups were greatly respected. Due to the imperial patronage, it was also during this period that Taoism finally congealed into a more formalized religion. Thus from the Tang dynasty on through to the Sung dynasty, Taoism became the official religion of the state.

Beneath the surface, most people felt that this was right because Buddhism was a cultural import whereas Taoism was "home-grown." However, the practice of Taoism in the Tang dynasty was entirely different from the original Taoism of the Han dynasty since anapana, the skeleton visualiza! tion met hod, Zen and many other features of Buddhist cultivation had already entered into it and become assimilated into its body of knowledge. In fact, one could say that Taoism had become a second Buddhism. As an example, when two Buddhists bumped into each other they would extend greetings by saying, "Amitofo." The Taoists, on the other hand, would say, "Wu liang shou fo," which meant, "The Buddha of Infinite Life." In fact, this was simply Amitofo's name translated into Taoist terms.

Buddhism by the period of the Tang dynasty had filled in most of the teaching gaps left by the lack of original Indian material. The Mahayana and Hinayana schools of Buddhism therefore existed side-by-side together due to the fact that a lot of the original source material had already been transmitted to China from India. The famous monk Xuan Zang (Hsuan-tsang) also returned from his studies in India during the reign of Emperor Tang Taizong. The Emperor so respected him that he had a team of nearly a thousand scholars assembled to help translate the Buddhist materials that Xuan Zang had brought back. All sorts of people helped in this translation project--Taoists, Confucians, even Manichaeists--and the result was a body of work that had a tremendous, almost immeasurable impact on Chinese culture. Because of this translation effort, the Consciousness-only prajna teachings of Maitreya Buddha (which form the Yogacara tradition) finally became available in Chinese, and this made the set of Chinese Buddhist translations virtually complete.

Zen in the jaws of the lion

From Vegas Seven Magazine
By Joseph Langdon
December 8th, 2011
Photos by Hamesh Shahani
The MGM lion, that great golden idol of so many earthy desires, long dominated the view from the Zen Center's old home in an industrial park on Dean Martin Drive. Not your typical ambiance. And yet, when Zen master Seung Sahn paid a visit, the renowned Korean founder of the Kwan Um school declared: "The jaws of the lion is a wonderful place to practice Zen!"
"What he was saying was that Vegas is wonderful because it's not hiding anything," says the Zen Center's abbot, Thom Pastor. "'Desire mind'—sex, drugs, gambling, alcohol—all of it is right here. There's no pretense. No trying to hide it or veil it, it just is what it is. [Zen master Seung Sahn] told me, 'If you can find your center here, then going anywhere is no problem.'"
We talk cross-legged on the floor of the Zen Center's new digs, pretty little whitewashed buildings with blue trim at Harmon and Eastern avenues. The center moved here in 2009, thanks in part to the collapse in housing prices (call it karma). It has 18 pine trees and a sculpted pool out back (although one of the new waterfalls is on the fritz). Inside, members of the 50-person congregation chant, bow and sit in silent meditation. The room is simple, though not austere, and is dominated by a large golden statue—not the MGM lion, but the Buddha in his serene pose.
Pastor, 65, has a wide grin and a shorn head. His presence is at once avuncular and intimidating. He has a tendency to whack interlocutors on the thigh with a short stick, especially when they're trying to take accurate notes.
This is Las Vegas' very own Zen master—and his path to the Buddha goes straight through the heart of Sin City.
In a previous incarnation, Pastor was a master sax player (among 10 other woodwinds). He toured the world with the likes of Humperdinck, Anka and Tom Jones before settling down in 1973 to spend 15 years on the Strip playing behind Frank Sinatra and other headliners as part of the Caesars Palace house orchestra.
In Buddhism, a bodhisattva is a being who attains enlightenment but decides to stick around here for a while to help out the rest of us bums. Now, I'm not saying Sinatra was one of these guys, but he did help Pastor down the path, in a manner of speaking. Pastor started to explore Zen as an antidote to those swingin' nights on the Strip, when he was seeking an alternative to the musician's traditional stress-reliever, the between-show cocktail. And he found that high-stakes musicianship can be good training for Zen.
Case in point: his first rehearsal with ! Sinatra at the old Circus Maximus. The famously temperamental Chairman of the Board only played with musicians he trusted, so when he noticed a new face in the woodwinds, Sinatra suddenly announced that he'd be conducting the first set of tunes himself. "Frank came and put one foot up on the riser right in front of me and said, 'OK, fellas, here it is,' and started conducting," Pastor says. Sinatra stayed there, looming over him and reading along with his music while he played. After getting through the tricky intro to "I've Got the World on a String," Sinatra passed the baton back to the conductor; the lead alto leaned over to Pastor and said, "Congratulations, you just passed the audition."
That audition, a one-on-one gut-check with the big guy, is not too unlike the Zen tradition of "dharma combat," in which the student must respond intuitively, with moment-mind, to challenges posed by the master. In 2002, Pastor survived dharma combat with five Zen masters, the last step in a 20-year process of study, retreats and training to become only one of 40 master dharma teachers worldwide in the Kwan Um School of Zen.
Pastor doesn't view his new life as a break with his old o! ne—he still finds time to perform in addition to abbot duties here and in centers in Madison, Wis., and Fairbanks, Alaska, and he just cut an album,Sleeping Lions, at the Straight Up Martini Lounge with his jazz outfit, B3 Conspiracy. Besides, Buddhism is about the oneness of all things, and that includes Las Vegans and all its denizens, too. And with times tough and looking to get tougher, a lot of us could do with a dose of the dharma. In a delightfully ironic metaphor, Pastor calls Buddhism the "Rolls-Royce teaching" about how to be happier with less. All you need is "moment-mind—not getting lost in your thinking, but being present in this moment."
That is the "bone of the teaching" that runs through all forms of Buddhism, and it fits the Vegas experience perfectly. From my new, more enlightened perspective, the Strip looks less like a Zen Buddhism obstacle course and more like a training course. Anyone here can see that nothing is permanent, not a hot streak, nor the city itself. And we are bombarded by reminders that grasping is endless—the promise of this place is that there will always be more to desire. If you are convinced that a jackpot will end your suffering, you will likely depart burdened with bad karma and calls fro! m collec tion agents. Instead, just open your eyes and take it all in: You'll probably have a decent time whether you hit blackjack or go bust.
"Gain and loss are just opposites," Pastor says. "Winning the lottery or losing all your money at the craps table—both have no meaning. The fan above you is whirring. The floor is brown. The Buddha is gold. That's my teaching to you. No more, no less. If you get caught in gain and loss, then you are a slave to your mind and to all things. If you attain pure mind, then complete freedom is available to you."
The Zen master falls silent, then chuckles. "Doesn't help the economy here, though!"

Yoga, the ability to focus the mind over a specific point without interruption, is being trained in quite a few modern options. It places substantial importance on one's body positions and breathing. Authors dubious that economic growth leads to happiness

The American economy is extraordinarily resilient. Despite the frightening slump that followed the housing bust, the economy (as measured by gross domestic product, or GDP) is bigger now than it ever was. American workers continue to be among the most productive in the world: Output per hour worked rose a smart 4.1 percent last year.

But that, John de Graaf and David Batker argue, is precisely the wrong way to look at the economy. Those impressive productivity gains? Largely the result of fewer people working longer hours for the same — or lower — pay. That GDP growth? Most of the additional wealth flows to the already wealthy, while incomes for the vast majority of people have stagnated or even declined for decades.

Into this season of discontent and Occupy Everywhere protests comes de Graaf and Batker's new book, "What's the Economy For, Anyway? Why It's Time to Stop Chasing Growth and Start Pursuing Happiness" (Bloomsbury, 292 pp., $ 25), which if it hadn't already been in press could almost be mistaken for an Occupy manifesto. Too bad this breezy, accessible book glides past a few too many tough challenges to wholly recommend it.

Authors de Graaf and Batker seek nothing less than to persuade Americans to abandon our preoccupation with economic growth as an end in itself. Rather, they say, the economy should be judged on how well it promotes overall happiness; their standard, adopted from 20th-century conservationist Gifford Pinchot, is "the greatest good, for the greatest number, over the longest run."

Which sounds fine, as far as it goes. Most economists will readily concede that GDP wasn't designed to be the sole gauge of economic success. And as de Graaf and Batker amply demonstrate, by counting just about everything that results in money changing hands, GDP includes lots of things that make life worse (oil-spill cleanups, hurricane damage, prisons) and excludes much of what makes life worth living (clean air, time with friends, raising a child).

But just what promotes happiness? That's a values question, and as such is more open to dispute than whether my new iPad should count in GDP. It's also a lot tougher concept for a society to reach consensus on than de Graaf and Batker admit. Even the Northern European countries they repeatedly hold up as examples went through a fair amount of social strife before reaching their happy social- democratic equipoises.

More seriously for a book aimed at a mass readership, too much of "What's the Economy For, Anyway?" preaches to the choir. If things like paid family leave, national health insurance, greater urban density and carbon taxes were as sensible and obvious as de Graaf and Batker paint them, they'd be law already. They are, of course, in places such as Finland, the Netherlands and Germany, which raises the question of why the United States chose such a path so different from other industrialized democracies. But aside from a few swipes at Ayn Rand, the authors never seriously try to answer that question.

The book covers a lot of economic ground, from the unexpected productivity benefits of time off to the challenges of evaluating "natural capital." And despite some glaring factual errors (Richard Nixon didn't launch the FBI's COINTELPRO operation, which began 13 years before Nixon became president; it was the Federal Reserve, not the Treasury Department, that pumped billions of newly created dollars into the economy), it's an informative, thought-provoking read. I just wish it were more realistic about how difficult the sort of shift it advocates would be to achieve.

Veterans to Learn Meditation

Veterans to Learn Meditation

Filmmaker David Lynch has donated one million dollars for the teaching of meditation to U.S. military veterans. About 20-30% of Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans suffer from PTSD. Some also suffer from depression and substance abuse related to PTSD.

Called ‘Operation Warrior Wellness’, the project aims to teach meditation to 10,000 veterans. Meditation has already been recognized by the military as having a healing potential for PTSD. One Iraq War veteran who tried meditation said, “From the first time I did it, I knew it was what I would do for the rest of my life. It was the first time I felt quiet in my mind for five years.” (Source:ABCNEWS)

A study partly funded by the Department of Defense found meditation training prior to battle could also benefit soldiers. The study of 48 soldiers found those who participated in an eight week mindfulness course before deployment in Iraq, had better moods, memory, and emotional awareness than the ones without the training.

Lynch has been meditating for decades, and is a Transcendental Meditation enthusiast. “With meditation, we have a treasure within. We get happier, and things get very, very good,” he said at the Operation Warrior Wellness press conference. (Source:

Yoga: A Definition

Article by Shovan Adhikary

A Definition

What does Yoga mean?

Yoga means Joined together. The word comes from Sanskrit root word yug, which means to unify. A Yogi is one ho consciously unifies the body, mind, emotions and spirit so that they work in harmony. Yoga is designed to enable people to begin from their present state of consciousness and move forward day by day, into a state of wholeness, well being and enlightenment.

How do most people live?

* The average person lives in a mental hurricane with a mind so turbulent that the usual concentration span is limited to only six seconds!

* Most people live in a storm of ideas: Constructive thoughts fight against biases, superstitions, fantasies, unremitting memories, dreads, doubts and occasional frustrating blankness. People become so accustomed to this mental turbulence that they think it normal!

* Almost everyone is influenced by emotions such as anger, jealousy, grief, fear and guilt. These invariably create anxieties, which often deprive oneself from peace, joy and love.

Kinds of Yoga

* Hatha Yoga

* Mantra Yoga

* Bhakti Yoga

* Karma Yoga

* Jnana Yoga

* Kundalini Yoga

* Kriya Yoga

* Raja Yoga

Hatha Yoga

* The term Hatha Yoga has been commonly used syllable "ha" denotes the pranic (vital) force governing the physical body and "tha" denotes the chitta (mental) force, thus making Hatha yoga a mean to awaken the two energies that goven our lives.

* The techniques described in the hatha Yoga harmonize and purify the body systems and prepares the mind for more advanced charka & Kundalini practices.

Mantra Yoga

* Mantras are actually the verses in Vedas and it is said that any person who can recite Vedas can achieve salvation or union with supreme consciousness. Mantra Yoga precisely aims to achieve that.

Bhakti Yoga

* Bhakti is a yoga of devotion ! or compl ete faith. This faith is generally in God and supreme consciousness in any of the forms. It may be lord Rama, Krishna, Christ, Mohammed, Buddha etc. It may be a Guru for disciples.

Karma Yoga

* Karma Yoga is a path of devotion to the work. One loses his identity while working only selfless work remains. This state is very difficult to achieve. Generally, one is attached to some rewards or incentives that follow the work. This is not karma Yoga. Non-attachment with the work and becoming the perfect instrument of the super consciousness in this manifested universe is the ultimate aim of Karma Yoga.

Jnana Yoga

* Jnana Yoga is the process of converting intellectual knowledge into practical wisdom. Jnana literally means knowledge but in the context of yoga it means the process of meditation awareness which leads to illuminative wisdom. It is not a method by which we try to find rational answers to eternal questions, rathu it is a part of meditation leading to self enquiry and self realization.

Kundalini Yoga

* This system of Yoga is concerned with awakening individual. There are six main charkas in the human beings. The mind is made of different subtle layers. Each of these layers progressively is associated with the higher levels of consciousness. Each of these levels is related to the different charka or psychic centre located throughout the psychic body. There are a number of other charkas apart from the main, which are associated with planes below the human level. In all, we have charkas that connect us to animal levels of mind, to the instinctive realms of being or to the sublime heights of consciousness.

Kriya Yoga

* The word Kriya means activity or movement and refers to the activity or movement of consciousness. Kriya Yoga does not curb mental fluctuations but purposely creates activity and awakening in consciousness. In this way, all faculties are harmonized and flower into their fullest potenti! al.

< p>

Raja Yoga

* Raja Yoga usually refers to the system of Yoga that is described in the Yoga sutras of sage Patanjali. Raja Yoga is a comprehensive Yoga system, which deals with the refinement of human behaviour and personality through the practice of Yamas (restraint) and niyam (discipline), attainment of physical health and vitality through asanas (postures) and pranayamas, management of mental and emotional conflicts and development of awareness & concentration through pratyahara (sensory withdrawal) and dharana (concentration), developing the creative aspect of consciousness for transcendental awareness through dhyana (meditation) and Samadhi (absorption) in the universal identity.

Miracles: Thought Experiment

Miracles: Thought Experiment

Without consciousness acting as an observer and interpreter, everything would exist only as pure potential. That pure potential is the virtual domain. It is nonlocal and can’t be depleted; it is unending and all-encompassing. Tapping into that potential is what allows us to make miracles. Miracles is not too strong a word.

Intrigued and troubled by the possibilities suggested by quantum physics, Albert Einstein devised his own thought experiment: Imagine creating two identical wave-particles that are then shot off in opposite directions. What happens if we ask about the location of wave-particle B? Remember, the particles are identical, so whatever measurement is calculated for one will, by definition, hold true for the other.

Knowing the location of wave-particle A (and thus collapsing it into a particle) simultaneously tells us the location of wave-particle B, and therefore also collapses it into a particle.

The implications of this thought experiment (which has been confirmed mathematically as well as experimentally) are enormous. If observing wave-particle A affects wave-particle B, that means that some nonlocal connection or communication is occurring in which information is exchanged faster than the speed of light, without the exchange of energy. That is contrary to every commonsense view of the world.

Let me try to illustrate the magnitude of this point with an example. Imagine that a company simultaneously sends out two identical packages, one to me in California, and one to you at your home. In each of the boxes is a correlated, unobserved wave-particle, pure potential.

You and I receive and open our packages at exactly the same moment. Just before I cut the tape and open the flaps, I create a mental picture of what I want the box to contain. When I open the box, I find it contains just what I imagined, a violin. When you open your box, it also contains a violin! Whatever I imagine for myself is matched, at the exact same moment, for you. This is what is meant by nonlocal communication or correlation.

Zen - Meditazione - Fabio Martella

An ordinary person may consider meditation as a worship or prayer. But it is not so. Meditation means awareness. Whatever you do with awareness is meditation. "Watching your breath" is meditation; listening to the birds is meditation. As long as these activities are free from any other distraction to the mind, it is effective meditation. Meditation is not a technique but a way of life. Meditation means 'a cessation of the thought process' . It describes a state of consciousness, when the mind is free of scattered thoughts and various patterns . The observer (one who is doing meditation) realizes that all the activity of the mind is reduced to one. A Tibetan Lama was being monitored on a brain scan machine by a scientist wishing to test physiological functions during deep meditation. The scientist said - "Very good Sir. The machine shows that you are able to go very deep in brain relaxation, and that validates your meditation". "No", said the Lama, "This (pointing to his brain) validates the machine!". These days it is commonly understood to mean some form of spiritual practice where one sits down with eyes closed and empties the mind to attain inner peace, relaxation or even an experience of God. Some people use the term as "my gardening is my meditation" or for jogging or art or music, hence creating confusion or misunderstanding. The word meditation, is derived from two Latin words : meditari(to think, to dwell upon, to exercise the mind) and mederi (to heal). Its ...
