Ways To Use The Power Of Mind Over Matter

'Mind over matter' is one expression which promotes the idea of the human mind being able to manipulate matter and indeed all reality.

From focusing your mind on other things to lessening an intense pain to even moving physical objects with the power of your thoughts; all are possible when you put your mind to it.

A close association exists between the phrase 'Mind over matter' and the term psychokinesis and the latter can even be stated to be an extreme form of the former as it entails being able to move matter physically with the sheer power of one's thoughts.

Buddhism and the West : Subsequent to a Friendly Encounter

It is estimated that there are now over 190,000 Buddhists in the United States. Most of these, however, are Americans of Chinese and Japanese origin who belong to the Pure Land Sect and are organized under the name The Buddhist Churches of America.1 The majority of these Churches, over fifty in number, are largely in Hawaii and on the West Coast. The second largest Japanese sect is Zen, the various groups of which include the First Zen Institute of America in New York City, the World Zen Center in Virginia and the Zen Mission Society in California. Among other Japanese groups are the San Francisco Nichiren Buddhist Church, the Chicago Jodo Mission, the Shingon Buddhist Church in Chicago and the Nichiren Shoshu of America (Soka Gakkai) in Los Angeles.

Though Buddhism in the States is predominantly Mahayana and Theravada missions are smaller in number, the study of Theravada Buddhism has become increasingly popular among Americans of European origin. Theravada Buddhists are also united into societies, centres, groups and Viharas. There are "Friends of Buddhism" groups in such cities as Washington D.C., New York, Chicago, Philadelphia and San Francisco. The American Buddhist Academy in New York City and other Buddhist groups by different names and in various places are also active in Buddhist study, propagation and, for a few organizations, training activities. According to the statistics available in 2512/1969, there were altogether about 254 Buddhist groups, centres, missions and societies, both Mahayana and Theravada, in the United States. Of these, about 84 were in Hawaii, while the other 170 were on the American subcontinent.

Like the Mahayana groups, a number of Theravada centres in the United States are not American organizations but activities of Asian Buddhists. The Washington Buddhist Vihara houses a Theravada mission from Ceylon and it has a plan to establish centres in the major cities and train American monks to staff them. Thai Buddhists organized the Theravada Buddhist Cen! ter in N orth Hollywood in Los Angeles, which later became known as Wat Thai. Beginning with this first Thai temple in America, there are now more than a dozen of Thai temples in the States.

In Europe, while the Buddhist Society of Great Britain is still the biggest Buddhist organization, a number of local associations have been founded in cities, towns and universities in various parts of many European countries. Sri Lankan Buddhists contribute to this development by support-ing their mission at the London Buddhist Vihara in England and the Dhammaduta Society (Buddhistisches Haus) in West Germany. Besides the Buddhapadipa Temple in London, which was officially opened by his Majesty the King of Thailand on August 1, 2509/1966, Thai Buddhists have developed missions in some other parts of Europe such as the Dham-masucharitanucharee Temple in Waalwijk in the Netherlands, which was later changed to Wat Buddharam, and the Vipassana Centre at Surrey in England.

In Australia, the Buddhist societies in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane are incorporated under the Buddhist Federation of Australia. Of these societies, the New South Wales Society at Sydney is noted for its most active work. A Thai Buddhist mission was invited to Melbourne in 2517/ 1974 and a Thai Buddhist Vihara called Wat Buddharangsee was opened in Sydney in the latter part of the year 2518/1975.

Besides books, booklets and pamphlets, Buddhist journals and periodicals have made a great contribution to the spread of Buddhism internationally. A number of such publications issued by Buddhist groups and organizations in America, Europe and Asia have a world-wide circu-lation. "World Buddhism", printed in Sri Lanka, and the WFB News Bulletin distributed from the WFB headquarters in Bangkok are probably the best known and most widely read Buddhist monthly periodicals. Other publications include the Vesak Sirisara, the Buddhist annual of the Sri Saddharmadana Samitiya in Sri Lanka; Visakha Puja, the annual publication of the Buddhist Association o! f Thaila nd; The Middle Way and the Friendly Way, quarterlies of the Buddhist Society and the Buddhapadipa Temple in London respectively; The Maha Bodhi Journal of the Maha Bodhi Society; Voice of Buddhism of the Buddhist Missionary Society in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; "Metta," the journal of the Buddhist Federation of Australia; and The Golden Lotus, mimeographed magazine published in Philadelphia. It would not be practicable to name here all the Buddhist journals and periodicals issued in the various countries. In the United States alone, twenty-three Buddhist bulletins, newsletters, monthly magazines and annuals were on the list in 2512/1969.

Whitney Houston's Addictions: How Couples Share Their Drug Habits

Whether Whitney Houston, who died on Saturday (Feb. 11), had substance abuse problems before her marriage to the singer Bobby Brown, or whether she was influenced by his "bad boy" ways, one thing is clear: the fact that the couple shared a drug habit is not surprising, experts say.

By and large, couples tend to have similar drinking, drug and smoking habits, research shows.

A common reason for this is that we tend to marry people who share our values and interests, including activities such as drinking and smoking, said Kenneth Leonard, director of the Research Institute on Addictions at University at Buffalo, in Buffalo, N.Y.

"Oftentimes, people will not be accepting of a partner who is doing something that is sort of different from themselves," Leonard said. This means relationships in which one couple is a heavy smoker or drinker, and the other is not, often won't last, or won't begin in the first place, Leonard said.

In fact, one of Leonard's studies showed that recently married couples who were discordant in their drug and alcohol use — that is, one was a heavy user and the other was not — were more likely to be unhappy in their marriage compared with those who shared these behaviors— for better or for worse.

And other research suggests older couples who are discordant in these behaviors are more likely to divorce, Leonard said.

But that doesn't mean you should go looking for a mate that has similar alcohol and drug habits as you, Leonard said. What is more important in terms of a lasting relationship is that couples maintain similar values and expectations about the marriage, he said.

And while marrying your drinking buddy may mean that your marriage won't suffer, the shared behaviors "may promote continued dangerous levels of drinking or drug use," and possibly have a detrimental impact on other parts of your life, such as your ability to parent, Leonard said.

Road to recovery

Though similar people tend to get together, married couples who are different in terms of their drinking and drug habits can also influence each other. If discordant drinking and drug behavior is causing marital stress, the nonuser in the partnership may change their behavior, Leonard said, and take up the alcohol or drug habit.

Regardless of how couples come to share a drug or alcohol habit, once they do, it becomes harder for either partner to quit, said Bruce Goldman, director of substance abuse services at the Zucker Hillside Hospital of the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System in Glen Oaks, N.Y.

"If you're in a relationship in which both parties use, the decision to enter recovery is even more difficult," Goldman said. That's because the dynamics of a relationship can change if one partner stops using and the other one doesn't, he added.

And even if both couples enter rehab together, it is by no means smooth sailing, Goldman said. In this case, an individual not only has to worry about her recovery, but also the recovery of her partner, he said.

While a more healthy relationship may be on the horizon, "that transition may be rocky," Goldman said.

Benefits of marriage

But marriage isn't just an institution for swapping bad behaviors. In fact, many in many cases, the opposite is true. A smoker who is married is more likely to quit smoking in the following year than an unmarried smoker, Leonard said. Married people are also more likely to get regular medical checkups than unmarried people, he said.

And married people tend to drink less than their single counterparts, said Kathryn Graham, head of social and community prevention research at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, in London, Ontario.So what exactly determines if a marriage has a positive or negative influence on health? Researchers don't know for sure, but how vulnerable a person is to peer influences may play a role, said Dr. Ihsan Salloum, professor of psychiatry and director of the alcohol and substance abuse treatment program at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. In a sense, a marriage is a more complex, more focused peer relationship, Salloum said.

An individual's genetic predisposition to addiction, her personality and how much she values the relationship with her partner all play a role in determining whether one spouse adopts the drinking or alcohol behavior of the other, Salloum said.

How to Find Time for What Really Matters

Do you ever feel as though weeks, months, even years, are going past, without you making any real progress in your life? Often, our time can get swallowed up in the busy-ness of day-to-day living: emails, commuting, meetings, chores, TV...

You've probably got some aspects of your life that really matter to you, but that never seem to get the time they deserve. Perhaps it's your family or friends. Maybe it's that novel you've always meant to write, or that small business you want to start.

Here's how to find enough time for the things that are truly important:
  1. Get Up Earlier
    If you work a regular office job, you might tell yourself that you'll work out / study / draw up that business plan during the evenings. But, day after day, you'll reach 6pm and find yourself so tired and demotivated that you just slump on the sofa.

    The solution? Make time for the important things at the start of your day. That means getting up earlier – perhaps half an hour or an hour before your usual alarm call (and heading to bed earlier so you get enough sleep).

  2. Multitask (Appropriately)
    You probably know that multi-tasking is generally a bad idea – you can't read emails and talk on the phone and work on your report all at the same time.

    In a few cases, though, multitasking is a great idea. For instance, you could:
    • Listen to audio books while driving to work, or exercising
    • Read a book while traveling by bus / train / plane
    • Make phone calls while you're out walking
    Essentially, any time you're engaged in a purely physical t! ask, see whether there's some way you can combine it with a mental one.

  3. Make Specific Plans
    You're not going to magically end up with lots of free time to work on your novel or hang out with your family. You need to make actual plans. And if you want to maximize the chance that you'll stick to those plans, either put money on the line or get other people involved.

    That might mean booking tickets for a concert you want to go to, or agreeing to meet up a friend to go for a job. It could mean paying to attend an evening class, or promising your kids that you'll take them to see a movie on Saturday.

  4. Ring-fence Certain Days/Times
    This is similar to #3 ... but you're not necessarily making specific plans to be somewhere. You're simply setting aside time on a regular basis to work on an important goal or project.

    That could be:
    • You always spend Tuesday evenings reading a book, instead of watching TV.
    • You've blocked out Saturday mornings to work on your small business.
    • Every Friday lunchtime, you get out of the office and sit in a cafe with your laptop for an hour, writing your novel.
    By "ringfencing" particular days and times, you make it easy to avoid committing yourself to other activities. You also ensure that you're making steady progress towards a goal, by working on it at least weekly.

Child Who Cries During Urination Puzzles Doctors

A little girl in England seemed perfectly fine except for one thing: her eyes welled up with tears every time she peed.

In fact, a rare situation in which the eyes produce tears when a person passes urine may be more common that thought — because it's painless, and perhaps more of an inconvenience than anything else, people may be unlikely to seek medical help for it, researchers in England who dealt with the little girl's case reported today (Feb. 13).

The cause of the condition may lie in the brain or in the facial nerves, according to the report. Both the production of tears and the passing of urine are under the control of a brain region called the pons.

The report is published online in the journal Pediatrics.

An unusual case

The 3-year-old girl was brought to doctors in November 2009, because of "watering of her eyes every time she passed urine," according to the report. When it happened, her jaw would drop and her expression would become vacant, although she remained conscious and was not in any pain, wrote the researchers from University College London Hospital, and Conquest Hospital in Hastings.

The problem began when the girl was just weeks old. An ultrasound of her kidneys revealed nothing abnormal, and there were no signs dry eyes or of any other medical problem.

The researchers searched the medical literature, and found only one other formal report of a similar case, from 1932. In that case, a young man who was a medical student reported a "copious flow of dears during defecation and urination."

The man kept track of his symptoms for 94 days, according to that report by a researcher at the University of Louisville in Kentucky, and the problem was fixed by a dose of atropine, a drug that lowers the activity of certain nerves, and can also be used to dilate the pupils of the eyes.  

Looking for more information, the researchers in England turned to health websites, and found more cases. A search of online discussion groups revealed 35 people who described having the problem of tear production during painless urination. Slightly more than half were female, and three described having a close relative with similar symptoms.

None of the people had sought medical advice, saying that the tears, while inconvenient and embarrassing, weren't a significant medical problem, according to the report.

A clue from crocodile tears?

In their search for an explanation, the researchers looked at what happens when someone cries "crocodile tears." Though the term has more recently been applied to insincere or fake crying, the original description of crocodile tear syndrome was based on people who would cry while eating or drinking, due to either a facial injury or a condition called Bell's palsy.

In those cases, nerves that regrow after an injury or disease may be misdirected toward the lacrimal gland, which produces tears, according to the report. There are also cases of crocodile tear syndrome occurring from birth, and these cases may be due to the nerves crossing over during embryonic development, the researchers wrote.

If such an abnormal nerve connection could cause a person to have produce tears while eating or drinking, a similar process could cause a person to produce tears when they urinate, according to the report.

However, this would not explain the little girl's vacant expression, or her jaw dropping when the crying happens, according to the report. For now, those symptoms remain a mystery.
