What Is Yoga And Is It Different From Pilates

Article by millie

YogaYoga is about feeling good about yourself and Pilates is about toning the body

So many people think Pilates and Yoga are the same but they are not. Pilates is about physical conditioning of the body using a Pilates machine. It focuses on core strength and lengthening of the body.

Yoga is about meditation and breathing techniques. You do find a lot of people combine both of these exercises and both are very popular.

Yoga is focused on breathing, meditation and how you feel about yourself and calming your mind and body at the same time. Yoga helps with many things and creates a sense of well being and calm. Meditation means to slow down and focus on the mind and that is what yoga concentrates on.

Emotionally, it allows you to work with the energy centres of your body to improve your emotional well-being. When you do Yoga you learn breathing control to improve your health and function of both body and mind. Breath is the main source of nourishment for all the cells of our bodies and is a technique we learn to do right in Yoga classes. When doing Yoga you hold the movements of your body with breathing control, Pilates you do not.

You do not burn any calories with yoga which is why this exercise is combined with Pilates and the benefits of both are amazing if you have time to do both.

Research has shown yoga can help with problems like anxiety, asthma, headaches and stress which many of us suffer from now and why Yoga has become very popular for stressed out individuals and is wonderful for stress management.

Yoga has so many benefits and until you try it you will not know how you feel about this exercise and I recommend trying it at home first. Yoga can take some time to learn and there are a lot of books and dvds out here so you can get an idea of the different movements involved before you join a class.

Yoga and Pilates are a great combination exercise routine.

Enumerating the 5 Ways that Yoga is Practiced & How it Helps Deal with Anxiety & Stress

Article by Thomas B. Chuong

Panic attacks, stress and anxiety problems – if these three are common problems that you have, then you are probably seeking help. Naturally, these issues can be resolved with the help of medication – but the problem is that there are potentially harmful side effects of putting too much chemicals on your body when the reason for the anxiety attacks may be psychological.

When dealing with panic attacks, stress and anxiety problems, it is high time for you to consider the ancient discipline of yoga. Yoga is a series of exercises, breathing techniques and principles which aim to create a balance between the mind, body and spirit. Can you imagine how much your anxiety will be lessened if only you can manage to create that balance between your mind, body and spirit simply by doing yogic exercises?

The 5 Ways that Yoga is Practiced

To give you a deeper look at what yoga is all about, here are the five ways that this ancient Indian discipline is practiced.

1. Yoga as a spiritual practice.

2. Yoga as a lifestyle choice.

3. Yoga as a primary means for physical therapy.

4. Yoga as a sport.

5. Yoga as physical fitness and health management activity.

No matter which of these ways of practicing yoga it is that you choose, what is important is that it can be used to treat any anxiety, stress or panic-related problems that you have. Exactly how can yoga do that?

Let's say that you are suffering from a panic attack. When you do the yogic breathing techniques or exercises, their goal is to help relax both your mind and your body. Whatever physiological factors are causing the stress, anxiety or panic attack that you are suffering from, the meditation techniques involved with yoga will 'heal' them.

As you get to practice yoga more, you will learn that discipline of being able to calm your mind, relax your body and essentially relax your spirit as well. Over time, you will discover that the way that yoga techniques and breathing exercises! are pra cticed will lessen the frequency of your panic attacks, ease away your anxieties and relieve the stress that you are feeling.

All in all, yoga is beneficial for anybody who is dealing with a certain amount of stress in their lives. It is even more crucial to practice if you have panic attack episodes – so try out yoga now and ease away any anxieties that you still have.

"Job quitters are the happiest people around", and How to Deal with Soulless Careerists [Quotables]

"Job quitters are the happiest people around", and How to Deal with Soulless CareeristsLast Friday The Awl's Choire Sicha keyed a post of career advice for young people, but whether you're young or not, the post's full of relatable, head-nod moments.

For starters, Sicha's take on quitting rings true:

Yes, you should not worry too much about the consequences and you should definitely quit your job that you hate and it'll probably all work out great. Job quitters are the happiest people around.

Chronic quitters may be a different story, but if you care enough that quitting is hard for you, then you probably don't need to worry about it. The meat of Sicha's post, however, is devoted to workplace "divas, drama queens, vampires, bitter underminers and soulless careerists" who can undermine just about anyone who pays them too much attention. Regarding the soulless careerists as the most harmful, Sicha puts the responsibility of stopping them on your shoulders:

The soulless careerists, though: they get where they are because social training doesn't allow us to stop them. They depend upon our unwillingness to say "bad things" about people. But if you don't, who will?

It is incumbent upon you to put a fucking boot in the face of the soulless careerist.

It's a great post, so head over to The Awl for the full read. If you're experienced at dealing with toxic peers, share your antidotes in the comments. Image remixed from Kat.

Ways To Use The Power Of Mind Over Matter

Article by Andrew Woley

'Mind over matter' is one expression which promotes the idea of the human mind being able to manipulate matter and indeed all reality.

From focusing your mind on other things to lessening an intense pain to even moving physical objects with the power of your thoughts; all are possible when you put your mind to it.

A close association exists between the phrase 'Mind over matter' and the term psychokinesis and the latter can even be stated to be an extreme form of the former as it entails being able to move matter physically with the sheer power of one's thoughts.

In order to explain the extent of human mind power influence over matter, parapsychologists in the 19th century carried out research and various experiments. At first the reason behind such phenomena were thought to be due to spirits and was termed Telekinesis but later when the role of human mind was discovered, it was coined Psychokinesis.

Such phenomenon can be measured and categorized into two groups - Micro psychokinesis and Macro psychokinesis. While the former involves small movement in matter that can only be seen with the help of scientific instruments, the latter refers to bigger movements that can be seen by ordinary eyesight.

In the field of spirituality or philosophy, the less extreme version of the expression 'mind over matter' is seen to be reflected. Here, it is the mind centric aspect of the same which gets more focus with the responsibility assumption concept.

The core essence of responsibility assumption that is found in personal growth studies talks about you being solely responsible for how your life turns out to be. Simply put, the destiny that unfolds for you in the function of your own mind and the thoughts it harbors.

Other concepts like law of attraction or metal affirmations also talk about the same thing.

According to the law of attraction, the power of visualization and affirmations can attract whatever you desire in your life into manifestation in reality. What ! you need to do is focus all your attention and concentration on this object of desire of yours, visualizing yourself attaining the same and affirming your subconscious mind.

Countless claimants to the power of psychokinesis exists in our world of which some can be mentioned in this point.

Martin Caidin is one of those who was the author of the novel Cyborg in 1972 and was alleged to move energy wheels kept on one or more table tops.

An Israeli man named Uri Geller was also noted for his spoon bending techniques while an alleged Soviet psychic Nina Kulagina made many black and white short films where she was seen to demonstrate psychokinetic actions.

Felicia Parise on the other hand was an American laboratory technician who got inspired from the Nina Kugani films and started consciously practicing intense concentration towards psychokinesis which was happening to her spontaneously otherwise. Having mastered the same, she was able to mobe objects like compass needles, plastic pill containers, aluminum foil etc.

At the height of her career was also featured as the First American to Move Matter with Mind by the tabloid National Enquirer. She retired after reporting bodily stress from psychokinesis demonstrations.

Coming down to the most spiritually advanced place in the world, the great mountain range of the Himalayas in India, Nepal and Tibet, one can say that this vast place radiates with positive energy and hence is called the seat of spirituality in the ancient East. Sadhus and monks who renounce everything that is worldly reside here in the nooks and corners spending their lives in harnessing the powers of the mind and being experts at it.

Demonstration of psychokinesis by powerful individuals can be seen openly if you visit India during the time of their holy pilgrimage called the Kumbh Mela (Annually), Ardha Kumbh Mela (once in 6 year) or Purna Kumbh Mela (Once in 12 years). It is when all the great sadhus come down from the mountains to take a dip into the waters of ! the holy river Ganges.

To conclude, one can safely say that the power of the human mind can make any impossible possible. Right from moving matter physically to attracting your desire from the universe, you can create, control and change whatever you want in your life an in this world. Infact, one can create his own destiny by using the power of thoughts, concentration faith and true belief.

Buddhism and the West : Subsequent to a Friendly Encounter

Article by Arjanyai

It is estimated that there are now over 190,000 Buddhists in the United States. Most of these, however, are Americans of Chinese and Japanese origin who belong to the Pure Land Sect and are organized under the name The Buddhist Churches of America.1 The majority of these Churches, over fifty in number, are largely in Hawaii and on the West Coast. The second largest Japanese sect is Zen, the various groups of which include the First Zen Institute of America in New York City, the World Zen Center in Virginia and the Zen Mission Society in California. Among other Japanese groups are the San Francisco Nichiren Buddhist Church, the Chicago Jodo Mission, the Shingon Buddhist Church in Chicago and the Nichiren Shoshu of America (Soka Gakkai) in Los Angeles.

Though Buddhism in the States is predominantly Mahayana and Theravada missions are smaller in number, the study of Theravada Buddhism has become increasingly popular among Americans of European origin. Theravada Buddhists are also united into societies, centres, groups and Viharas. There are "Friends of Buddhism" groups in such cities as Washington D.C., New York, Chicago, Philadelphia and San Francisco. The American Buddhist Academy in New York City and other Buddhist groups by different names and in various places are also active in Buddhist study, propagation and, for a few organizations, training activities. According to the statistics available in 2512/1969, there were altogether about 254 Buddhist groups, centres, missions and societies, both Mahayana and Theravada, in the United States. Of these, about 84 were in Hawaii, while the other 170 were on the American subcontinent.

Like the Mahayana groups, a number of Theravada centres in the United States are not American organizations but activities of Asian Buddhists. The Washington Buddhist Vihara houses a Theravada mission from Ceylon and it has a plan to establish centres in the major cities and train American monks to staff them. Thai Buddhists organized the Theravada Buddhist Cen! ter in N orth Hollywood in Los Angeles, which later became known as Wat Thai. Beginning with this first Thai temple in America, there are now more than a dozen of Thai temples in the States.

In Europe, while the Buddhist Society of Great Britain is still the biggest Buddhist organization, a number of local associations have been founded in cities, towns and universities in various parts of many European countries. Sri Lankan Buddhists contribute to this development by support-ing their mission at the London Buddhist Vihara in England and the Dhammaduta Society (Buddhistisches Haus) in West Germany. Besides the Buddhapadipa Temple in London, which was officially opened by his Majesty the King of Thailand on August 1, 2509/1966, Thai Buddhists have developed missions in some other parts of Europe such as the Dham-masucharitanucharee Temple in Waalwijk in the Netherlands, which was later changed to Wat Buddharam, and the Vipassana Centre at Surrey in England.

In Australia, the Buddhist societies in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane are incorporated under the Buddhist Federation of Australia. Of these societies, the New South Wales Society at Sydney is noted for its most active work. A Thai Buddhist mission was invited to Melbourne in 2517/ 1974 and a Thai Buddhist Vihara called Wat Buddharangsee was opened in Sydney in the latter part of the year 2518/1975.

Besides books, booklets and pamphlets, Buddhist journals and periodicals have made a great contribution to the spread of Buddhism internationally. A number of such publications issued by Buddhist groups and organizations in America, Europe and Asia have a world-wide circu-lation. "World Buddhism", printed in Sri Lanka, and the WFB News Bulletin distributed from the WFB headquarters in Bangkok are probably the best known and most widely read Buddhist monthly periodicals. Other publications include the Vesak Sirisara, the Buddhist annual of the Sri Saddharmadana Samitiya in Sri Lanka; Visakha Puja, the annual publication of the Buddhist Association o! f Thaila nd; The Middle Way and the Friendly Way, quarterlies of the Buddhist Society and the Buddhapadipa Temple in London respectively; The Maha Bodhi Journal of the Maha Bodhi Society; Voice of Buddhism of the Buddhist Missionary Society in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; "Metta," the journal of the Buddhist Federation of Australia; and The Golden Lotus, mimeographed magazine published in Philadelphia. It would not be practicable to name here all the Buddhist journals and periodicals issued in the various countries. In the United States alone, twenty-three Buddhist bulletins, newsletters, monthly magazines and annuals were on the list in 2512/1969.

Traveling Through Majestic India - A Back To Basics Account

Article by Ceb Matheson

Undecided on where your next travel destination will be? Step out of your comfort zone and into a world where poverty, culture and breath-taking history intertwine. You may be very suprised at spiritual enlightenment and intense culture that India has to offer.

Long haul vacations have become commonplace today as more of us seek out exotic destinations. There is nothing more fascinating than discovering the hidden wonders India has to offer. It is a country of contrast, with wonderful scenery, top class accommodation and ancient temples.

India really offers the best of both worlds, you can visit the amazing sites and experience the tourist culture on offer, and just five minutes down the road you can stumble upon true third world conditions where for some, every day is a struggle to survive.

Visiting these parts of India can be very humbling experience, to have the opportunity to see how a hidden majority of the population lives, and even to inspire oneself to take the steps to giving something back to these communities in need.

By far the most attractive tourist destination is the state of Goa in the west. Goa is a particular favorite among our top travel destinations for the younger generation, having gained a reputation for its beach lifestyle and dance parties. There are several beaches to choose from and the annual carnival is the highlight of the year. This region is a former Portuguese colony and much of the colonial architecture remains. The main religions are Hinduism and Roman Catholicism as is evident by the many breathtaking church and temple tours on offer.

Southern India is another tourism hotspot offering a relaxed surrounding as you take in the culture, the ancient temples, and the spectacular tropical forests and beaches. There are also a number of vibrant cities and two National Parks. The regional cuisine is known as an outstanding contribution to Indian food. Many travelers make it a point to go through Tamil Nadu to see the hill stations! , noted for their scenic locations. There is wonderful architecture, temples and cultural traditions.

Tamil Nadu contains the city of Madurai, an unforgettable place on any agenda for India travel. The city is full of temples, the most famous one being the Meenakshi Temple. Madurai also contains the Gandhi Museum, where his robes are displayed and there are workshops, a store selling fabrics woven on a handloom and a bookstore containing spiritual publications.

Where-ever you decide to travel in India, One aspect of your trip that you will notice is how welcoming the locals are. Despite their sometimes extreme-poverty, you will always find a smiling, generous face.

The people are a contributing factor in making India such a spiritual place to visit, along with the breathtaking sights and rich cultural history held by the buildings and landmarks. The state of Bihar contains the village of Bodhgaya, which is a sacred place, cherished by Buddhists. Buddhists travel here on pilgrimages from all over the world to see the famous Mahabodhi Temple. The most sacred feature is the descendent of the Bodhi tree that the Buddha sat under and gained his enlightenment.

Obviously the most well-known landmark in India is the Taj Mahal, an incredibly beautiful structure of white marble, built in the Islamic style in the 17th century. Known as one of the seven wonders of the world, it is located in Agra in Uttar Pradesh. Its origins are pure romance as a Mughal emperor built it as a tribute to his wife, whom he adored. The mosque, ornamental gardens and mausoleum are simply stunning and more than live up to its reputation.

Whitney Houston's Addictions: How Couples Share Their Drug Habits

Whether Whitney Houston, who died on Saturday (Feb. 11), had substance abuse problems before her marriage to the singer Bobby Brown, or whether she was influenced by his "bad boy" ways, one thing is clear: the fact that the couple shared a drug habit is not surprising, experts say.

By and large, couples tend to have similar drinking, drug and smoking habits, research shows.

A common reason for this is that we tend to marry people who share our values and interests, including activities such as drinking and smoking, said Kenneth Leonard, director of the Research Institute on Addictions at University at Buffalo, in Buffalo, N.Y.

"Oftentimes, people will not be accepting of a partner who is doing something that is sort of different from themselves," Leonard said. This means relationships in which one couple is a heavy smoker or drinker, and the other is not, often won't last, or won't begin in the first place, Leonard said.

In fact, one of Leonard's studies showed that recently married couples who were discordant in their drug and alcohol use — that is, one was a heavy user and the other was not — were more likely to be unhappy in their marriage compared with those who shared these behaviors— for better or for worse.

And other research suggests older couples who are discordant in these behaviors are more likely to divorce, Leonard said.

But that doesn't mean you should go looking for a mate that has similar alcohol and drug habits as you, Leonard said. What is more important in terms of a lasting relationship is that couples maintain similar values and expectations about the marriage, he said.

And while marrying your drinking buddy may mean that your marriage won't suffer, the shared behaviors "may promote continued dangerous levels of drinking or drug use," and possibly have a detrimental impact on other parts of your life, such as your ability to parent, Leonard said.

Road to recovery

Though similar people tend to get together, married couples who are different in terms of their drinking and drug habits can also influence each other. If discordant drinking and drug behavior is causing marital stress, the nonuser in the partnership may change their behavior, Leonard said, and take up the alcohol or drug habit.

Regardless of how couples come to share a drug or alcohol habit, once they do, it becomes harder for either partner to quit, said Bruce Goldman, director of substance abuse services at the Zucker Hillside Hospital of the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System in Glen Oaks, N.Y.

"If you're in a relationship in which both parties use, the decision to enter recovery is even more difficult," Goldman said. That's because the dynamics of a relationship can change if one partner stops using and the other one doesn't, he added.

And even if both couples enter rehab together, it is by no means smooth sailing, Goldman said. In this case, an individual not only has to worry about her recovery, but also the recovery of her partner, he said.

While a more healthy relationship may be on the horizon, "that transition may be rocky," Goldman said.

Benefits of marriage

But marriage isn't just an institution for swapping bad behaviors. In fact, many in many cases, the opposite is true. A smoker who is married is more likely to quit smoking in the following year than an unmarried smoker, Leonard said. Married people are also more likely to get regular medical checkups than unmarried people, he said.

And married people tend to drink less than their single counterparts, said Kathryn Graham, head of social and community prevention research at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, in London, Ontario. So what exactly determines if a marriage has a positive or negative influence on health? Researchers don't know for sure, but how vulnerable a person is to peer influences may play a role, said Dr. Ihsan Salloum, professor of psychiatry and director of the alcohol and substance abuse treatment program at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. In a sense, a marriage is a more complex, more focused peer relationship, Salloum said.

An individual's genetic predisposition to addiction, her personality and how much she values the relationship with her partner all play a role in determining whether one spouse adopts the drinking or alcohol behavior of the other, Salloum said.

Pass it on: Couples commonly share drinking and drug behaviors, which may make it harder for either to quit, experts say.

Exercises that work for fat reduction, particularly those that do not demand much energy, are challenging to locate. Fortunately Asian women have mastered several different procedures to shed pounds without needing to do endless cardio sessions or hard work.

Exercises That Work For Weight Loss,

Today I am going to let you in on a little secret that I found out from my Grandfather growing up in Taiwan...

Tai Chi!

Tai Chi is an ancient martial art that has been taught for centuries all over China and a good deal of Asia. It uses flowing, slow movements that put an importance on being fluid and smooth, with preciseness. It's incredibly easy to learn, even if you've never tried it before, and is similar to studying a slow dance routine really.

The best part about Tai Chi to me personally are that the positive aspects it delivers. They are just fantastic for anyone looking to get slimmer and get fit, while at the same time bettering the quality of their life big time.

Some of the health benefits scientists have identified from those who practice Tai Chi are like a formula for the perfect healthy body:

Stress Reduction - Essential to fight off the creation of the hormone "cortisol" in our bodies, which makes it very difficult to burn fat.

Enhanced Heart Function - A more powerful heart does not need to have to work as hard to do its job, which means it will last longer.

Overall flexibility - As time goes on we learn more and more about how necessary being flexible is to shedding unwanted weight through activation of muscle fibers.

Low Impact - You will likely not have discomfort from your knees and lower back or sensitive areas while engaging in the workouts, which makes it wonderful for those who are looking to lose extreme amounts of weight.

The list goes on and on. It has even been established that people who carry out Tai Chi suffer from equilibrium and other motion related injuries HALF as often as people who don't!

How to Find Time for What Really Matters

Do you ever feel as though weeks, months, even years, are going past, without you making any real progress in your life? Often, our time can get swallowed up in the busy-ness of day-to-day living: emails, commuting, meetings, chores, TV...

You've probably got some aspects of your life that really matter to you, but that never seem to get the time they deserve. Perhaps it's your family or friends. Maybe it's that novel you've always meant to write, or that small business you want to start.

Here's how to find enough time for the things that are truly important:
  1. Get Up Earlier
If you work a regular office job, you might tell yourself that you'll work out / study / draw up that business plan during the evenings. But, day after day, you'll reach 6pm and find yourself so tired and demotivated that you just slump on the sofa.

The solution? Make time for the important things at the start of your day. That means getting up earlier – perhaps half an hour or an hour before your usual alarm call (and heading to bed earlier so you get enough sleep).

  2. Multitask (Appropriately)
You probably know that multi-tasking is generally a bad idea – you can't read emails and talk on the phone and work on your report all at the same time.

In a few cases, though, multitasking is a great idea. For instance, you could:
    • Listen to audio books while driving to work, or exercising
    • Read a book while traveling by bus / train / plane
    • Make phone calls while you're out walking
Essentially, any time you're engaged in a purely physical t! ask, see whether there's some way you can combine it with a mental one.

  3. Make Specific Plans
You're not going to magically end up with lots of free time to work on your novel or hang out with your family. You need to make actual plans. And if you want to maximize the chance that you'll stick to those plans, either put money on the line or get other people involved.

That might mean booking tickets for a concert you want to go to, or agreeing to meet up a friend to go for a job. It could mean paying to attend an evening class, or promising your kids that you'll take them to see a movie on Saturday.

  4. Ring-fence Certain Days/Times
This is similar to #3 ... but you're not necessarily making specific plans to be somewhere. You're simply setting aside time on a regular basis to work on an important goal or project.

    That could be:
    • You always spend Tuesday evenings reading a book, instead of watching TV.
    • You've blocked out Saturday mornings to work on your small business.
    • Every Friday lunchtime, you get out of the office and sit in a cafe with your laptop for an hour, writing your novel.
By "ringfencing" particular days and times, you make it easy to avoid committing yourself to other activities. You also ensure that you're making steady progress towards a goal, by working on it at least weekly.
What are your real priorities in life? How could you start dedicating more time to them? Feel free to share your ideas and thoughts in the comments below.

Infertility Yoga - How it Can Help You Conceive

Article by V. Volk

Infertility Yoga can bring a lot of hope to your situation if you are struggling with infertility problems. This form of Yoga has its focus in strengthening the reproductive system by relaxing the mind and body. Normally practiced to enhance health and well-being, the ancient Indian tradition of Yoga is very effective in dealing with problems concerning sexuality and infertility.

Benefits of Infertility Yoga

Yoga involves the mind and body, and requires active participation of both. It brings balance to the body and relaxation to the mind. Yoga is beneficial in such cases where there is a problem with hormone imbalances or blocked fallopian tubes. Yoga helps women to prepare their minds and bodies for conception, pregnancy, and childbirth, and it's great for stress reduction and relaxation.

Infertility yoga consists of asanas which are very effective for both men and women. It's a great idea to practice these exercises with your partner. Strengthening the pelvis and hips is the focus of most asanas as these areas are where much of the tension from emotions and mental and physical stress is concentrated. These asanas help to enhance the circulation of blood circulation and improve hormone balance.

Tips for Couples

A lot of couples are worried that they won't be able to get the postures right, so they refrain from trying Yoga. You don't have to worry about being as perfect as your Yoga instructor, though. Infertility Yoga is quite simple and the postures are very gentle on your body. You don't have to worry about straining, and your body will become more flexible as you continue to practice the exercises over time.

When it comes to Yoga, breathing and posture compliment each other. These two factors help you to relax and increase the circulation of blood in your body. You should breathe deeply and slowly while practicing Yoga, and try to maintain the same rhythm throughout your session. Your stomach should expand as you inhale, and do the opposite when you releas! e. Obser ve your body mentally as your breathing pattern normalizes. This will help you to further relax particular areas where you have more tension. And so, learning postures for your reproductive organs can make it easier for you to conceive.

Hopefully, you have learned something new about yoga in this article as yoga is a great way to get in shape, get a stronger body, lose weight and get your mind and body in balance. Check out http://www.TopYogaTips.com to find more exclusive yoga tips and yoga related products!

Child Who Cries During Urination Puzzles Doctors

urine-cup-test-11080802
CREDIT: Chris Townsend | Dreamstime

A little girl in England seemed perfectly fine except for one thing: her eyes welled up with tears every time she peed.

In fact, a rare situation in which the eyes produce tears when a person passes urine may be more common that thought — because it's painless, and perhaps more of an inconvenience than anything else, people may be unlikely to seek medical help for it, researchers in England who dealt with the little girl's case reported today (Feb. 13).

The cause of the condition may lie in the brain or in the facial nerves, according to the report. Both the production of tears and the passing of urine are under the control of a brain region called the pons.

The report is published online in the journal Pediatrics.

An unusual case

The 3-year-old girl was brought to doctors in November 2009, because of "watering of her eyes every time she passed urine," according to the report. When it happened, her jaw would drop and her expression would become vacant, although she remained conscious and was not in any pain, wrote the researchers from University College London Hospital, and Conquest Hospital in Hastings.

The problem began when the girl was just weeks old. An ultrasound of her kidneys revealed nothing abnormal, and there were no signs dry eyes or of any other medical problem.

The researchers searched the medical literature, and found only one other formal report of a similar case, from 1932. In that case, a young man who was a medical student reported a "copious flow of dears during defecation and urination."

The man kept track of his symptoms for 94 days, according to that report by a researcher at the University of Louisville in Kentucky, and the problem was fixed by a dose of atropine, a drug that lowers the activity of certain nerves, and can also be used to dilate the pupils of the eyes.

Looking for more information, the researchers in England turned to health websites, and found more cases. A search of online discussion groups revealed 35 people who described having the problem of tear production during painless urination. Slightly more than half were female, and three described having a close relative with similar symptoms.

None of the people had sought medical advice, saying that the tears, while inconvenient and embarrassing, weren't a significant medical problem, according to the report.

A clue from crocodile tears?

In their search for an explanation, the researchers looked at what happens when someone cries "crocodile tears." Though the term has more recently been applied to insincere or fake crying, the original description of crocodile tear syndrome was based on people who would cry while eating or drinking, due to either a facial injury or a condition called Bell's palsy.

In those cases, nerves that regrow after an injury or disease may be misdirected toward the lacrimal gland, which produces tears, according to the report. There are also cases of crocodile tear syndrome occurring from birth, and these cases may be due to the nerves crossing over during embryonic development, the researchers wrote.

If such an abnormal nerve connection could cause a person to have produce tears while eating or drinking, a similar process could cause a person to produce tears when they urinate, according to the report.

However, this would not explain the little girl's vacant expression, or her jaw dropping when the crying happens, according to the report. For now, those symptoms remain a mystery.

Pass it on: Tearing up while urinating is a fairly rare condition that has doctors stumped.
